MISSION
The Legacy Biomechanics Laboratory serves as an interface for knowledge transfer between orthopaedic practice and engineering sciences for the improvement of health care.

The Legacy Biomechanics Laboratory was founded in 1999 by Michael Bottlang, PhD, and Steven Madey, MD, under the premise that interdisciplinary collaboration between biomedical engineers and orthopaedic surgeons will catalyze strategies for the advancement of health care. Today, their team includes four orthopaedic surgeons, two Ph.D. scientists, three research associates at the masters level, as well as engineering students and orthopaedic residents.

The Legacy Biomechanics Laboratory is affiliated with the Legacy Level I Trauma Center and is housed in the Legacy Research & Technology Center, a 65,000 sqft facility which opened in 1997. It serves as a resource for basic and applied research and engages in industry collaboration.

Basic Research:

Traumatic Brain Injury Research
Functional Characterization of Cartilage Functional Tissue Engineering

Applied Research:

Pelvic Sling
Rib Plating
Bicycle Helmets

Industry Collaboration

Implant Migration and Micromotion
